Are you up for a change, a challenge or an opportunity to make a difference?
If so, please consider nominating for the National Council of the ANARE Club.
The National Council is made up of a diverse group of members, but all united by their wish to contribute to the continued growth and well being of the ANARE Club. Becoming a council member provides a real opportunity to shape the Clubs priorities and future.
There are 4-5 meetings each council year. Meetings are held on a Saturday or a Sunday at the Melbourne Aquarium. Funding for travel is provided to council members residing more than 50 kilometres from Melbourne. (See travel guidelines on the Council webpage or request a copy from the Secretary).
Under the current constitution of the ANARE Club there are 13 positions available for election to National Council. These include 5 Office Bearers (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Social Secretary) and 8 Ordinary Members.
The positions of the Membership and the Sales officer have traditionally been appointed from the ‘ordinary members’ of National Council. The editor of the Aurora, the webmaster and club historian are appointed by the National Council and may come from National Council or general membership (e.g. outside the National Council). The immediate past president is also appointed to National Council.
The role of each is of the elected positions is as follows: (job description provided by current incumbent)
President : As per the constitution: To chair council meetings and preserve order and to sign cheques. To provide the casting vote on council proposals when required. That is not the most exciting job description. In reality there is scope to make the job as interesting and challenging as you wish. I see my role primarily as to encourage and support participation of all council members in council discussions and projects, and improve communication with general ANARE Club membership to better reflect member wishes. (Ingrid Mcgaughey)
Vice-President : The ANARE Club's Vice President's role is primarily that of assuming the position of chairman of a Council meeting in the event of the President not being in attendance and to represent the President in an official capacity when the President is unable to do so. The additional function of the role is that of a participating and voting member of the Council. (Ray McMahon)
Secretary: Convene and attend all meetings, keep minutes of all general meetings and Council meetings, record all correspondence, (Bob Watson)
Treasurer: The Treasurer maintains the financial records off the Club, paying accounts presented (subject to the approval of the National Council), and depositing cheques. Monitoring direct deposits and PayPal payments and reporting the status of the Club’s finances to the quarterly meetings of the Council. Close liaison is maintained with the Sales Officer and the Membership Officer. (David Ellyard)
Social Secretary: The Social Secretary is responsible for co-ordinating social functions, especially the National (Melbourne) midwinter dinner. Each State branch has elected Social Secretary positions and the national position liaises with the State branches regarding their social and midwinter functions. The Social Secretary may also be required to organise some special events throughout the year. (Denise Allen)
General Council members: As a member of the national Council it is important to support each of the Office Bearers. This is largely achieved through our meetings held every three months. During these meetings many of the daily issues of the club are debated and usually an amicable agreement is reached. It is a very fulfilling job to be part of the team that sees the ongoing success of this proud club. I would encourage all ANARE members to become involved in the Committee in whatever way they feel they can help. (Damian Love)
Sales officer: Source a variety of merchandise for sale on the website, Aurora magazine and the Aurora Australis. Dispatch incoming orders. Demonstrate accountability for sales items and postage costs with quarterly and annual reports. Liaise with National Council and State representatives on designs and stock for Midwinter. Must have access to computer and printer. (Marilyn Boydell)
Membership Officer: To liaise with new members and verify service record, update the club database with new and renewal memberships, maintain club membership lists.
The AGM is on Monday July 11th 2011, commencing 19:30 at the Bayview Eden Hotel in Queens’s rd, Melbourne.
The purpose of the AGM is to:
All financial members of the ANARE club are welcome...
Basically all 13 elected National Council positions are open...
In order to encourage general member awareness of people nominating for the National Council the June Aurora and the webpage will run an article listing those interested in National Council positions. If you wish to be included in the ‘election spread’ please notify Secretary Bob Watson by the 25th May 2011 (and preferably prior) so we have time to format it for inclusion in the next Aurora.
Please note that this may not include all eventual nominees as nominations can be accepted by the secretary up to 24 hours pre AGM date.
Please also consider exercising your right to vote. This may be done by attending the AGM in person or registering a proxy vote for your preferred candidates.
The proxy vote has at times being controversial. However it is vitally important that each financial full member of the ANARE Club has some means of participating in the annual AGM, and in particular the process of voting for the members of Council. Being a National Association the venue for the AGM is inconvenient for most Interstate and Regional members to attend and express their views and participate in the voting procedure. The Constitution of the ANARE Club has a clause stating that a member may use a PROXY for the purpose of notifying the Secretary of their voting intention.
Further details on registering a proxy vote can be obtained from Secretary Bob Watson or on the website.
