Your National Council 2012-2013
David Ellyard - President
David has been active in the ANARE Club for 40 years and for almost that long has been Master of Ceremonies at the NSW Branch Midwinter dinners.
David wintered as the cosmic ray physicist at Mawson in 1966. In 2003 he was the ANARE Club representative on Voyage 2 of Aurora Australis, spending a week at Davis. In 2011 he travelled to Mawson's Huts at the invitation of the Antarctic Division to participate in the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Sir Douglas Mawson landing at Commonwealth Bay.
David is a science communicator, writer and public speaker with a particular interest in the issue of climate change.

Bob Watson - Secretary
Bob has been a member of the ANARE Club since returning from Mawson 1963 where he served as a Met Observer.
Bob states "I never took any active role in the Club, until I succumbed to pressure from several present and past council members to take over the Secretary position from Peter McGrath in 2008..."
Needless to say we are pleased he succumbed and congratulate him on a job well done.
Bob still works full time in the Electricity Supply industry in Distribution System Design & Maintenance which helps to pay for those overseas holidays. His interests are sailing, travel, renovating, music & grand children.

Jannes Keuken - Treasurer
Jannes served as a radar technician and weather observer, working for the Bureau of Meteorolgy, at Davis in 1959.
He remained with the Bureau after returning to Australia and worked in many places around the country, including the tropical paradise of Willis Island, off the Queensland coast.
He retired in 1987 as a Senior Technical Officer and since then has been involved in community work, mainly as a treasurer for various organisations..

Margaret Whitelaw - Membership Officer and General Council Member
Prior to being elected to National Council, Margaret served as Vice President of the NSW Branch of the Club.
Circumstances resulted in Margaret also serving as Acting Secretary, being responsible for the NSW Newsletter and helping with the organisation of Midwinter Dinners.
Margaret spent the 2004/2005 summer at Davis as a scientist collecting fossil shells from lakes in the Vestfold Hills as part of her organic geochemistry research.

Denise Allen - Social Secretary and General Council Member
Denise has been involved with the ANARE Club Council both at the National Level in Melbourne and at the state level in New South Wales.
Initially Denise worked as a meteorological observer but since 1989 she has been a forecaster.
She has had plenty of time 'down south' and has wintered at Macquarie Island in 1985, Mawson 1986 and 2005, Davis 1988 and 2007 and Casey 1992.

Ian Bruce - Webmaster and General Council Member
Ian joined ANARE in 1987, after 12 years in the Australian Army and wintered as a Radio Technical Officer at Casey in 1988 - the last year that the Tunnel was occupied.
Whilst at Casey, Ian was accepted for on-going employment in a telecommunications position at Antarctic Division Head Office - a position that allowed him to travel to Antarctica on a regular basis.
Since wintering at Casey, Ian has summered, on multiple occasions, at all Australia's permanent stations, visited foreign stations and, in 1997, wintered at Macca. Ian resigned from AAD in 2009.
Whilst at Casey, Ian was accepted for on-going employment in a telecommunications position at Antarctic Division Head Office - a position that allowed him to travel to Antarctica on a regular basis.

Brian first joined the ANARE Club in 1976 after three winters down south (Mawson 1977, Macquarie Island 1979 and Casey 1981) as a diesel mechanic.
He became motivated to become involved in the club administration in 1987 after the sinking of Nella Dan. He has served on national council for many years and has been president several times, most recently in 2007-2009.
Brian has been involved in many ANARE Club projects including the Nella Dan, the Huskies Jubilee and a project with Susan Gordon-Brown to record the stories of tradespeople whom have worked down south.

Joe wintered at Casey in 1981 and at Davis in 1998.
He was Voyage Leader on Polar Bird in the 2001/2 summer (during which time the vessel became ‘Mawson East’ during its long besetment) and on Kapitan Khlebnikov on Voyage 1 of 2002.
He has been a member of the Club since 1982 and has contributed several articles to Aurora. He was awarded the Australian Antarctic Medal in 2001.
He was joint author of the feasibility study into the current air link between Australia and Antarctica and is the Chair of the Australian Antarctic Names and Medals Committee.
He is a Viet-Nam veteran and spent 38 years in the Australian Army, mainly in the Army Reserve, retiring as a colonel.

Marilyn Boydell - General Council Member
Marilyn has devoted a lot of time to the Tasmanian State Branch of the Club and, being in Tasmania, she has been the defacto primary contact for talking to south-bound expeditioners.
AAD very generously allows the Club time at the pre-departure briefing to explain our role in the Antarctic community, This task is usually carried out by Marilyn, one that she has performed to an extremely high standard.
Marilyn was the station leader at Casey in 2000 and 2006, and Mawson 2002.

John Gillies - Editor of Aurora
John was the Radio Technician at Mawson in 1967 and Casey in 1969.
He later worked at the PMG/Telecom/Telstra research laboratories on TV conference systems, cable TV, and optical fibre. He took early retirement in 2001.
John has been actively involved in ANARE Club affairs for many years; he was a member of the National Council from 1975 until 1980 and from 1996 to the present, and was President from 2000 until 2002.
He was also the Editor of the ANARE Club History book in 2001, the 2001 ANARE Club voyage representative and recently redesigned the ANARE Club logo and badge.
Most importantly, he has been the Editor of Aurora since 2003.

Ian is a foundation member of the ANARE Ski Club at Baw Baw, and still skis each winter, making moves that many of the less agile ANARE Club members can only dream about. He has hosted many ANARE Club BBQs, bands and general get togethers at his bush property over the years.
He has been on the National Council in one form or another since 1974, and was the Club voyage representative in 1988.

Ingrid McGaughy - Immediate Past President
This is an appointed position rather than an elected one.
Ingrid was president of the Tasmanian state branch three years and has served on the National Council Vice President and President.
Ingrid was the doctor at Mawson in 1998 and Macquarie Island in 2000 and has since written a number of articles for Aurora including the history of huts on Macquarie Island, the cat eradication project and contemporary accounts of life on station.
