GOING SOUTH
Phillip Law Commemorative Antarctic Science Symposium

Theme: The Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) hosted an Antarctic Science Symposium titled Going South in Melbourne on Wednesday 15 September 2010. The seminar commemorated the career and contribution of the late Dr Phillip Law AC CBE FAA FTSE, Director of the Australian Antarctic Division from 1949 to 1966.

The seminar provided an overview of Antarctic Science and its relevance and importance to Australia. Speakers  addressed topics including the Evolution of Antarctic Science, Ice and Oceans, Terrestrial Biology and Risk, Life in the Oceans and Changing Climate. This seminar links the ATSE Victorian and Tasmanian Divisions, along with the Academy of Science and the Royal Society of Victoria, with support from the Australian Antarctic Division.

The welcome address by Peter  Laver can be found here.

Several ANARE Club members including Fred Elliott, Pat Quilty and Ian Toohill presented at the symposium. Their topics were:
'Conquering the Challenges: Phillip Law and Antarctica' - Fred Elliott and Ian Toohill
and '
Australia and Antarctica – a long and natural association' - Patrick Quilty

Fred Elliott has kindly shared his presentation here. It makes for fascinating (and fun) reading. There is also an audio file where Fred Elliott talks about Phil's contribution to Antarctic Science with Lisa Roberts.

Ian Toohill has also made his presentation available for the website. He gives a very personal account of Phil, based on many hours of contact and recording Phils story which later formed the basis of his book 'Dr Phillip Garth Law: His extraordinary life and times'. Copies of Ian's book are available for purchase from the ANARE Club sales page.

Many thanks to Lisa Roberts for recording the presentations and Denise Allen for doing all the transcription work for Ian Toohill and Peter laver's presentations so they are available on the website for all to read.
